Food Delivery Without Sight: What Works, and Workarounds

Ordering dinner should be the easiest thing you do on your phone. For you, it is often the hardest — and the apps keep changing. One update makes the menu readable, the next breaks it again. As one visually impaired participant in food-accessibility research put it: “When I struggle ordering food online, I feel like this food better be good because it was so hard [to order]… sadly this is normal for many restaurants” (James McDowell’s accessible-ordering research). This guide covers the four big services — DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, and Grubhub — with what works, what breaks and at which step, and the phone and text alternatives that skip the broken app entirely. Every claim below was verified against live sources in October 2026. Where evidence was thin, we say so plainly.

The pattern: updates break what worked

Blind users of food-delivery apps describe the same cycle across every service: the app works, an update ships, something breaks, blind users organize to complain, it gets fixed — until the next update. AppleVis forum threads document this “yo-yo effect” for years running: a 2022 thread is literally titled “The continually declining accessibility of the Uber eats iOS app,” and a late-2024 thread on the same forum reports an Uber Eats regression where tapping a restaurant opens the wrong one. One commenter in that thread summed up the resignation: “DoorDash also went half accessible on iOS several years ago and that never got fixed.”

The practical takeaway: treat every rating below as a snapshot of October 2026, and before depending on any app for tonight’s dinner, check the most recent AppleVis forum threads. An app that worked last month may not work this month.

DoorDash

Works with caveats

What works

• Browse, search, and the main ordering flow are largely usable with VoiceOver when the app is in a good version — many blind users order from DoorDash regularly.
• DoorDash’s published support line is 855-431-0459, listed on DoorDash’s own accessibility help-center page (verified live October 2026), with chat and call support advertised as 24/7.

What breaks

• The signature failure, reported on AppleVis: “When I choose a restaurant then the screen becomes totally unreadable.” The restaurant menu screen — the step where you actually pick your food — goes blank to VoiceOver (AppleVis forum, “Difficulty with the doordash app”). Whether this hits you depends on your app version and phone, which is exactly the problem.

Workarounds

• The unpublicized phone-ordering line: +1 (855) 300-8985. Blind users on AppleVis report that calling this number lets you place DoorDash orders over the phone as long as you already have a credit card saved on your DoorDash profile — no proof of disability is needed. DoorDash staffs this with a dedicated Voice Ordering Accessibility team (their job postings describe representatives supporting “accessibility needs customers, including but not limited to our visually impaired customers” with inbound live order calls — The Muse job listing). That this team exists, and is hiring, is the strongest evidence the line is a real, ongoing service rather than a rumor. Set up your account and payment method in the app first (or with help), then call to order.
• Text DoorDash instead of tapping. In September 2026 DoorDash launched an AI ordering agent you text — via Apple Messages — instead of navigating the app: text what you’re craving, it builds the cart, and you confirm checkout inside the text thread without ever opening the app (DoorDash announcement via Business Wire). Texting is fully screen-reader accessible by nature. Caveat: as of October 2026 this is in beta behind a waitlist at the DoorDash text-ordering waitlist — worth joining, not yet a sure thing. • Reorder your usuals. DoorDash’s grocery side now prompts one-tap reordering of routine items on your preferred grocer’s page — skipping the browse-and-search steps where accessibility breaks most often.

Uber Eats

Yo-yo: works, then breaks, then works

What works

• When the app is in a good version, the full flow — browse restaurants, customize items, check out, track the driver — is usable with VoiceOver. Third-party accessibility audits credit it with voice navigation, adjustable text sizes, and high-contrast visuals for low vision (auoow.com’s food-delivery accessibility analysis).

What breaks

• Updates repeatedly break it. The textbook case: in December 2024, app version 6.247.10000 shipped a bug where double-tapping a restaurant in a list opened the wrong restaurant — “if I double tap a restaurant within a list of restaurants, it always opens the first restaurant in the list no matter which one I actually tried to choose” (AppleVis, “Uber Eats regression on iOS”). Earlier, a 2022 update fragmented each restaurant listing into three or four separate VoiceOver elements, making scrolling the list “even more tedious than it already was.” Fixes arrive, then the cycle repeats.
• There is no public phone-ordering line. Uber Eats does not publish a general customer-service phone number; support lives in the app and on the help website. If the app is broken for you, there is no official phone fallback for placing an order.

Workarounds

• Order through the main Uber app’s Eats tab. Multiple AppleVis users confirm Uber Eats is also accessible inside the regular Uber app, under its Eats tab — “the interface seems to be considerably more clunky, but hey, at least it doesn’t have this issue, so it’s an option” when the standalone app breaks. When one app regresses, try the other before giving up.
• Report the bug, publicly. AppleVis users who filed reports saw fixes ship in subsequent updates — sometimes without any response, but the fix landed. Leave an App Store review describing the exact failure too; it warns other blind users and companies do read them.
• Don’t update on dinner night. If the app works today and you need it tonight, update tomorrow.

Instacart

Works

What works

• Instacart has the best blind-user reports of the four services. The accessibility-focused Supersense review calls the iOS app “highly accessible” with “clearly labeled buttons and tabs” (Supersense, “Accessible Shopping: An Instacart Review”). A blindness daily-living curriculum likewise lists Instacart alongside Walmart and Amazon as an accessible shopping platform for ordering groceries, reordering favorites, comparing prices, and tracking deliveries with VoiceOver.
• Instacart’s help center commits to WCAG 2.0/2.1 AA and names JAWS, NVDA, TalkBack, and VoiceOver as supported.
• Customer support by phone: 1-888-246-7822 (widely documented, including Clark.com’s verified contact guide). Note this is a support line for order problems and billing — not a line for placing orders.

What breaks

• No current blind-user reports of major breakage surfaced — which is itself the signal. The usual friction is mainstream (substitutions, delivery windows), not accessibility-specific.

Workarounds

• Lean on reordering. The most accessible order is the one you don’t have to build: reorder past carts and favorites instead of browsing aisles.
• If a specific screen gives you trouble, the phone support line above can resolve order issues with a human — say “agent” at the automated menu to skip to a person.

Grubhub

Company-claimed; awaiting verification

What works

• Grubhub publicly commits to optimizing its app for iOS VoiceOver and Android TalkBack, plus Voice Control and Switch Access, against WCAG 2.1 AA (Grubhub Onsite accessibility announcement). Its campus kiosks add JAWS screen reading with a headphone jack, high-contrast mode, and dynamic text scaling — the most thorough public accessibility statement of the four services.
• Phone ordering exists through restaurant listings. The phone numbers shown on Grubhub restaurant pages route through a Grubhub-staffed call center where you can place an order, ask about a previous order, or get connected to the restaurant (Restaurant Business coverage of Grubhub’s call system). It’s an assisted-ordering path hiding in plain sight.
• Customer care: 877-585-7878, 24/7 (GetHuman, verified current October 2026).

What breaks

• Company statements are not user reports: we found far fewer current blind-user reviews of the Grubhub app than of DoorDash or Uber Eats, so treat the accessibility claims as company-claimed, community-unconfirmed for the latest versions. The accessibility page leans heavily on campus dining — and that campus business is mid-acquisition (DoorDash announced a $300M purchase of Grubhub's campus dining unit in September 2026, closing in the first half of 2027), so its future under new ownership is unknown. We have asked Grubhub directly about screen-reader accessibility and will update this section when they reply.

Workarounds

• Use the restaurant-listing phone numbers for assisted ordering when the app fights you.
• Grubhub’s menus are generally well-structured with item names, descriptions, and pricing — if the app is readable for you, customization options (notes, substitutions) are a strength.

Phone alternatives at a glance

When the app is the problem, the phone is the answer. Here is what each service offers beyond the touchscreen:

Workarounds that work on any service

• Reorder, don’t browse. Every service lets you reorder past orders and save favorites. The most accessible order flow is the one with the fewest screens: favorite what you like once (with help if needed), then reorder in two taps forever after.
• Call the restaurant directly. For local spots, the restaurant’s own phone number bypasses every app entirely — and many take phone orders for pickup or their own delivery. Old-fashioned, fully accessible, and the restaurant keeps the whole sale.
• Leave public App Store reviews. AppleVis forum members explicitly advise this: when an update breaks accessibility, a public review warns other blind users and puts pressure on the company. It is the community’s most effective advocacy tool.
• Use a visual interpreter for the last mile. Aira or Be My Eyes can read an unreadable menu screen, confirm the right restaurant opened, or check a customization option the app won’t announce. Faster than fighting the app for twenty minutes.
• Keep two services set up. When Uber Eats breaks, DoorDash’s phone line still works, and vice versa. Redundancy is the only real defense against the yo-yo.
• Check AppleVis before you depend on an update. The forum’s app directory and iOS threads are the early-warning system — blind users report regressions within hours of a bad update shipping.

What we could not verify

We couldn’t verify the following as of October 2026:

• The DoorDash phone line’s live status. We verified it three ways — the current AppleVis thread still cites it, DoorDash staffs a Voice Ordering Accessibility team for exactly this purpose, and DoorDash’s own help center lists 24/7 call support — but we could not place a live test call. If you try it, the community would benefit from a fresh report.
• Grubhub’s current app accessibility — company claims are strong but recent blind-user field reports are thin; rated on claims plus the phone fallback, not on fresh user evidence.
• DoorDash text ordering — in beta behind a waitlist; we could not verify the blind-user experience of the actual text flow.
• Day-to-day breakage — the yo-yo effect means any rating here can be outdated by the next app update. Treat this guide as a snapshot, and check recent AppleVis threads before a critical order.
